Day 11: Moray y Maras

On Sunday, my roommates and I took a road trip to Moray, Maras, Urubamba, and Chinchero. We had planned on taking a taxi since these locations are about an hour outside of the city, but apparently not many taxis would offer such a long trip on a Sunday. Instead, Sandro, our host father, offered to drive us and thank goodness he did because I don't think I would have trusted any stranger on those roads. You know, those tiny roads on the edge of cliffs that they show in movies? Yeah we traveled on some of those today. It all turned out to be good fun since we survived.

First, we went to Moray, which I had already visited briefly the day before with my class.

After that, we hit up Maras, the salt mines. It was an incredible place to see. Like every other place ever, pictures can't do it justice.

The saltiest place on Earth. Probably. 

From Maras we went to the coolest city ever, Urubamba, to eat lunch. This place really surprised me. I wasn't very interested in going here, but it was probably the most beautiful place I've been to yet. Unfortunately, we only ate there and then left. The only pictures I got were from inside the car. But wow. I could have stared at the mountains there for the rest of my life and have been happy. They were incredible. I'm almost tempted to delete the few pictures I did take because they didn't capture how incredible Urubamba was at all. I definitely have to go back there some day.

Here's a drive-by picture. These were the coolest mountains. And the city was so small and so cute. It was more like how I thought Cusco would be, but Cusco is actually huge.

Here's the super-cool restaurant we ate at. There were a bunch of huts like this set up.

After lunch, we were way too tired to go to the other places on our list, so instead we headed back to Cusco. We made a stop at Chinchero to see some ruins and visit a market there.
